Whatever Hebrews 8:7-13 means, Luke 5:33-39 cannot be used to teach that Jesus was against Judaism. And whatever interpretation one comes to for Hebrews 8:7-13, it must be reconciled with the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:17.In verses 25-27, Jesus is referring to two Old Testament stories (1 Kings 17:1-24 and 2 Kings 5:1-14) that would be familiar to the people then but are not so familiar to us. Look closely at the two people who receive ministry: the widow at Zarephath in Sidon in verse 26, and Naaman the Syrian leper in verse 27.

Then circle the words "no one" in the first part of Luke 5:37, and then also in the first part of Luke 5:39. So we have three pictures, or three parables to illustrate Jesus' answer. The first picture, in Luke 5:36, is of a garment and it shows us that Jesus was not here to patch up the old garment. Jesus brings new garments. Look at Luke ...

Often, we must be persistent in prayer (Luke 11:5-13, Luke 18:1-8). Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

Luke 5:17-26. November 7, 2012 by Jeremy Myers 2 Comments [Note: This is the "Old" version of the Grace Commentary on Luke. It will be updated to the new version soon.] This passage is often used to prove that Jesus claimed to be God. Though Luke makes this point later in his account, such a reading is not the best understanding of this text.
Luke 8:26-39. Jesus heals a demoniac in the land of the Gerasenes (see also Matthew 8:28 - 9:1; Mark 5:1-20). They arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. When Jesus stepped ashore, a man who had demons for a long time met him. He wore no clothes, and didn't live in a house, but in the tombs.

Another serious problem with the incompatibility interpretation is the closing line of Luke 5:39, "And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, 'The old is good.'" [Or "the old is better."] This troublesome verse is found only in Luke's version of the double parable, and even then the Western version of the text omits it.
